If you think the economy and national defense are not related, look at this video. The Ruskies have a plane in the air that is way more bad ass than anything we have ON THE DRAWING BOARD. I don't know about you guys, but for me this is a serious paradigm shift. Is it possible that we are already slipping behind?

but to respond to your thought:
we've been "behind" for years. not since the WPA have led the world in engineering, sure the stealth bomber was important, but i am talking big scale; dubai style buildings, bridges, dams, you name it. Scandinavia is a head of us. democracy is inefficient and uncoordinated. you need command economies to develop this kinda stuff. the market is just to scatter brained to lead to major innovation, look at drug companys, they've got their sellers so why innovate?
but what it comes down to is, how much does it matter?
nuclear proliferation, space, IT...does our falling behind into second or third place put us at risk?
i say yes.
